Something is clearly happening. But what senior professionals are currently doing with AI for career purposes is not career coaching. It is career admin.
The Admin Trap
The typical senior professional using AI for career purposes opens ChatGPT, pastes in their CV, and asks for a rewrite. The output is polished, grammatically perfect, and almost entirely useless for strategic decision-making. Because the AI knows nothing about your specific situation. It starts from zero every single time, what you've asked it to remember from you or what it chose to remember about you. All of which you must maintain to keep accurate and up to date.
That is the fundamental limitation of generic AI for career strategy: no dedicated memory, no true continuity, no specialised methodology.
What Career Intelligence Actually Looks Like
The difference comes down to three things.
First: context accumulation. Effective career support requires understanding your situation in depth, not just your job title but your values, constraints, and history of decisions. Human coaches build this across sessions. Generic AI tools do not.
Second: methodology. The world's best career transition support is built on validated coaching frameworks. Structured approaches to self-assessment, market analysis, positioning, and action planning. Generic AI prompts do not apply them.
Third: accountability. "You said you were going to reach out to three people this week. How did that go?" That simple check-in transforms intention into action. No generic AI tool does this.
The Methodology Gap
